After the big question is popped and you say “Yes” and the initial shock has worn down, you will want to personally notify your family or friends. This notification can be accomplished through meeting them in person, via phone call, or social media such as Facebook or Twitter. It is recommended that you tell people that are important to you that you notify them in person as this is more personal and intimate. By notifying your family or friends in person it gives them the opportunity to congratulate you in person. It also can give the family or friends the opportunity to see the ring. When notifying people via social media, you can make the announcement fun, personal, witty or just plain simple. You might like to add a picture of your lovely hand (this gives you a great excuse to get a manicure) with the “Rock”.
The next step that logically comes to mind is to establish your wedding style, location and wedding budget. You will need to pick a date and book a venue. These tasks set the “mood” of the wedding and give you the chance to research how other “brides” have held their weddings similar to the style and budget that you will have. It will give you great ideas for wedding favors, ideas for dresses, the cake, the flowers, the venue and possible vendors. It would be a great idea to start a wedding blog so that you will have documentation of your “big day”. Plus, in the future you can look back at this wonderful time in your life. You can invite your family and friends to visit your blog to see the progression of your wedding plans, view your engagement pictures, etc.
Afterwards would be to establish who your wedding party is going to be; you need to ask your maid of honor and bridesmaids if they will stand up for you on your wedding day. You need to encourage your groom to ask his best man and the other groomsmen that will be in the wedding party. After you have established the wedding party you need to establish your guest list. To do this you will need to talk with your parents and the groom’s parents. You and the groom also need to sit down and think about how many people you want to help you celebrate your big day. Do you want a small personal wedding or a big celebration with a lot of family and friends? It was suggested that you might watch movies that depict weddings such as Father of the Bride I and II, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Wedding Crashers, The Proposal, etc. Not only will these movies give you some ideas but they have some humor mixed in as sometimes planning a wedding can be very stressful so a little laughter might be just what the doctor ordered.
The other ideas for getting the creative juices flowing would be looking on Pinterest, or just googling wedding ideas and see all the amazing ideas that pop up. Another idea would be to purchase some bridal magazines for ideas on the dress, bridemaids dresses, flowers, photo ideas for the photographer, the cake, etc.
I hope all these ideas on what you should do after becoming engaged help you to prepare for your big day!
Congratulations on becoming engaged!
