Next Step: Accessorize

Nov
19

Congratulations, you have found your perfect dress!  Next step: accessorize!  Even though your biggest accessory is your ring, you can still express your style with a little something extra. Use it to show off your individuality. Lets face it, the traditional wedding ensemble has been around for a very long time, and while it is the tradition that makes is so special, it can never hurt to make it your own.

The biggest trends focus on adding vibrant colors through jewelry, shoes, handbags, as well as hair accessories.

Shoes are becoming one of the ways of expression. It started out as a fun way to add that something blue, but it has now grown into pinks, greens, reds, any color at all just to brighten up the dress.

Obviously when it comes to wedding jewelry you don’t want anything that is going to take away from the ring. A lot of brides now though are adding a little subtle pop of color into their jewelry. Also, jewelry that has a vintage look is gathering a lot of attention from brides.

One of the biggest trends for 2012 and for the upcoming seasons as well is the feather fascinators. This goes along with the vintage trend and allows brides to step away from the traditional veils. These fascinators are large bridal hair accessories worn on the side of the head as a part of the hairstyle and the feather fascinators are inspired from the recent royal wedding of last year where there was an overflow of wedding hats and head pieces.

Quirky Wedding Traditions

Sep
16

Quirky Wedding Traditions from around the world.

I am sure you have heard of all types of wedding traditions from one person or another.  But did you know that there are many different traditions in many different countries that have the same meaning.  India, for example, believes that you should have an artist draw designs on your hands and feet with henna.  The darker the henna the more luck it is suppose to bring you.  In other middle eastern countries this symbolizes protection from evil. In China, if you want to keep the evil spirits at bay, you should light firecrackers after the ceremony. In the United States, if you want to protect your bride from evil spirits, you need to carry her over the threshold.

In Ireland, it is believed that if you put some lavender in your bouquet, you will have happiness in your marriage.  For a Checz bride and groom to have happiness in their marriage, a plate is broken at the feet of the couple before the reception begins.  The bride and groom must sweep up the chips together.

In Scotland, to have good luck in your union, put a branch of white heather in your bouquet.  Whereas in Egypt pinching the bride is considered good luck and the English believe that a spider in the brides wedding dress will bring good luck (think I will stick with the white heather).  Although, in the Hindu belief, having rain on your wedding day will also bring you good luck.

Now, if you want to keep your marriage sweet and renewed, try putting a wrapped piece of sugar in your glove.  That is the way it is done in Greece.  In Holland, if you plant lilies of the valley around your home, the love of you and your spouse will renew every spring.

If you are a person who believes in superstition, then there are certain beliefs about the day you should get married.  The English believe the “best day” to get married is Wednesday.  Although, Mondays will bring you wealth and Tuesdays are for good health.  On the other hand, according to English legend, Saturday is the unluckiest day to get married.

Lets talk dresses!  “Something old” is used to symbolize continuity with the past, whereas, “something blue” symbolizes purity, fidelity and love.  There are different meanings in different cultures regarding the dress.  Traditionally in the U.S. a white dress is worn symbolizing purity.  This is also the same in Japan.  In Asia, wearing robes with cranes embroidered on them symbolizes fidelity.  In Korea, brides wear bright hues of red and yellow for fidelity.

So, while you are planning your wedding and thinking of wedding traditions, remember there are many different meanings behind why people choose to have certain things incorporated into their weddings.

Wedding Tips Wedding Itinerary to Wedding Officiant

Sep
01

Offering our monthly tips through our social sites of facebook and twitter.  Join us!  Here are our most popular posts in the month of August.

We suggest to write a wedding day itinerary so you can expect how the day will flow and lower stress levels. Do this 2 weeks before the wedding.

To prevent uninvited guests, we suggest to utilize the words “intimate wedding”. This will help the honest people honor the number attending.

Japanese Wedding Invitation

A cost cutting and fun way to save on the wedding dessert? Have a bake-off with your family and supply a small prize. Pies, cookies, etc.

Come help us raise funds for the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the American Cancer Society! Event details:http://main.acsevents.org/goto/weddingmuseum

Cost cutting idea – Don’t spend big bucks on bling. Ask a close relative or friend to use their special jewelry. It’s something borrowed too.

Must haves in beauty bag – Mascara, lip gloss, hand lotion, blush, comb/brush, dry shampoo, body wipes, eye drops and deodorant.

According to The Wedding Report: The average cost of a wedding fell by one tenth of a percent (0.1%) to $25,615 from $25,631 (2011).

Looking for decor inspiration for your wedding favors? Check out the paper at http://www.paper-source.com/

We suggest not to buy extra flowers to have around as decor. Spend on the focus flowers, centerpieces and bouquets. Get flowers in color palette.

Keep in mind that the bridesmaids’ dresses should match the groomsmen’s’ ties. It will make your event more classy!

Cost cutting idea – Use real flowers on your wedding cake. A life-like sugar rose will cost you more than a fresh one.

When is offseason for planning a wedding? November through April. Check with local planners though as it is VERY hot in Vegas June-August.

A unique way to save on table numbers? Use picture frames from around the house or garage sale. Fill with famous quotes or unique themes.

Cost saving help – Time is money when creating bouquets. It takes less time to bound stemmed flowers then wiring a bouquet.

Money saving tip – Put trays in a tray pedestals in the middle of the reception tables. They make great centerpieces and dessert time.

Decor for winter themed weddings include mistletoes, gloves, socks, wreaths, throws, wraps and sleighs.

If you want to save on RSVP cards, have guests RSVP through your wedding website. Otherwise, RSVP postcards are $0.15 less postage than stamped envelopes.

One of the best free apps for you to remember to-do lists is called Remember The Milk. Send reminders to yourself via SMS, email or IM.

Save on a wedding cake and centerpiece at the same time. Put unique serving trays on short pedestals and add colorful cupcakes on top.

Table assignments are helpful in preventing chaos. However, skip place cards to save on printing costs. Guests would prefer to mix and mingle at their table.

Want a personalized wedding officiant and save also? Ask a friend to officiate. Better yet, ask a group of friends to officiate to make it more personal.

Wedding Venue Do’s and Don’ts

Aug
04

As anyone who has even planned the smallest of registry office weddings will tell you, getting everything arranged for your big day can be extremely stressful. After deciding on what you are going to wear, the venue is perhaps the most important part of the planning phase.

wedding venue

We looked at some key do’s and don’ts when it comes to choosing the perfect wedding venue for your special day.

DO: Shop Around

It is understandable that some people have their perfect wedding venue; the place that they always dreamed of getting married in. While this may be the case, it is always worth having a look at several venues in order to decide which one best suits your needs. A castle, for example, might be a venue you and your partner always dreamed of, however if there is a lack of other facilities and it is in the middle of nowhere is it really that practical?

DON’T: Take Their Word For It

As part of the “shopping around” process, make the time to attend a function that is taking place in each venue, if possible. We are not for a moment suggesting you begin to gate crash other people’s weddings, however by arranging convenient times to visit with the venue management you will be able to see what you are likely to get for your money.

This also means you can assess things like the “house DJ” and food for yourself, and decide whether you will need to hire your own and the additional cost.

DO: List Guests First

If there are certain people that you definitely want to invite to your wedding, then you should write the guest list out first. If you know you want to invite 100 people, then immediately you can eliminate any smaller venues from your choices. You will be surprised how many venues are actually aimed towards smaller groups, so could find your choices limited and your budget challenged should you be thinking of inviting 100 plus guests.

DON’T: Go Over The Top

By this we mean in terms of space. If you want to go over the top in terms of decorations, pomp and circumstance, then that is of course up to you. However, having settled on numbers of guests do not then hire somewhere twice the size of what you really need, unless they offer a fabulous package that you simply cannot refuse.

DO: Negotiate on Costs

How you do this will depend on where you are holding the wedding. If you are hiring a public venue then you will be, in effect, subsidising what the venue would ordinarily make during that day so there will likely be little room for discussion. Should you be hiring a private hall or venue, then you will be much more likely to be able to do a deal.

Bride to bridesmaids don’ts – Go broke from expenses, ask to alter appearance, ask guests to stay with them, burden them with your wedding.

Wedding Help – If sending invitations to a friend in a serious relationship, send one card with each name on separate lines. Not serous? Send each an invite.

Looking for cake stands? Check out http://www.sarahsstands.com/ and fishseddy.com

Cost cutting catering – Offer 2 options (meat/meatless) meals, sparkling cider vs champagne, comfort food vs 5-star food, dessert bar vs wedding cake, skip seafood.

Ways to save funds on your venue – think rural over urban, don’t pick a Saturday, a place offering BYOB, ceremony & reception in one place, negotiate, beautiful location for less decorations.

An In-House Reception or House Ceremony

Jul
09

A wedding engagement provides the perfect opportunity to redecorate a home, and an excuse to hold an in-house reception. For smaller wedding parties, an in-house reception, or even a house ceremony, can be just the ticket for providing a private and intimate location for a very important occasion. However, some couples might consider their homes a little too Spartan for the occasion, and feel embarrassed about having a well-dressed party. Even for those that don’t, there are sure to be some home decorating accessories out there that they may not be aware of!

home wedding centerpiece

For instance, so much of home décor is about colour and texture, which is why 60’s style linty fabrics are so tacky in curtains and couch upholstery. In white rooms, more contemporary styles call for earth tone coloured grommet panels, and maybe some snowy white linen table cloths. Grommet panels in particular are a favourite of mine, since they combine the best elements of shutters and drapes.

A well-furnished kitchen is a must too. After all, it’s sure to get a huge workout during the festivities! Be aware that stemware is not the only thing that one can appropriately drink wine out of, and that a chic decanter can really complete a table aesthetically and naturally begs the conversation of what’s actually in it.

It’s important to set the right mood on occasions like these, whatever your preferred atmosphere might be, but it’s also important not to break the bank in a time of so many financial obligations. Good news is, cute pieces of kitchenware, dark intimate curtain sets, and other contemporary interior design items can often be bought quite affordably, which is one of the great things about post industrialist styles. Stainless steel kitchen cutlery or bathroom hardware, for example, can be quite affordable, and lovely in its minimalism.

Food Gifting on the Rise: Wedding Shoppers Realize Good Food Equals Great Gifts

Mar
17

Food has a unique way of connecting people. It brings together families and friends, joins people in reminiscing or in experimenting, and is the center of celebrations, memories and friendships. With this year’s wedding season approaching, more nuptial presents will include desserts, entrees and specialty foods than ever before.

Food gifting, for both weddings and in general, is one of the few areas that has increased despite the down economy over the last few years. Edible gift sales rose nearly 10 percent in the United States from 2007 to 2009, according to the report “Food Gifting in the United States, Second Edition,” and experts say those numbers continue to grow.

This rise is marked by both an increased demand for specialty foods, like truffles, gourmet marshmallows or artisan granola, as well as the rise in smaller food companies adding ecommerce capabilities to their websites. With these boutique delicacies on the web, gift shoppers not only have convenient access to foods from across the country, they can also easily send these tasty treats directly to the recipient’s door.

More than anything, food offers a unique way to personalize gifts – after all, it’s easy to warm the heart when you fill the stomach!

When shopping for a bride and groom, food is a perfect addition to an item off their registry. Buying an oversized pot? Complete a date-night package with fresh lobsters straight from Maine. Getting the dessert trays she asked for? Add a selection of oatmeal cookies and sweet candies. Can’t make it to the shower? Send a bouquet of cake pops for the bride and guests to enjoy.

The bride herself has a number of gifts to buy as the big day approaches. With online food vendors she can now find gifts for the wedding party, typically made up of people from all different stages of the couple’s life, with a personalized touch.  You can buy ice cream for your sister from your favorite shop in the town you grew up in. For your college roommate, the soup you had on your spring break ski trip.  And for the parents of the couple, share your wedded bliss with a romantic evening of their own complete with steaks, all the fixings and a bottle of wine.

As wedding season approaches once again, be prepared with a food gift whether you’re at the altar or catching the bouquet.
