16 Modern Waltz Songs for Weddings

Nov
28

What is the Waltz?  The Waltz in a ballroom dance in triple time with a strong accent on the first beat.  The waltz is primarily danced in the closed position.  It is believed to have started in the 16th century.

A typical song is about 3-4 minutes in length.  Therefore, plan for a minimum of 12 hours of practice to perfect your dance.  If you choose to make your first dance a waltz, contact your local dance studio and they will help with a choreographed routine.  If you select your first dance as a waltz, it is also commonly known as the Bridal Waltz.

If you are the bride and groom dancing a waltz for your first dance, be sure to practice with the bride wearing her wedding dress (even if it is in private without the groom).  This way you can test the length of the dress and the weight so all the turns can be performed as expected.

If you would like to see a waltz danced, view past shows of Dancing With The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance. Some of the songs listed below were danced to on past episodes. For your convenience, we also listed they music genre and release date of each song.

Unique Wedding Favors

Nov
15

Wedding favors are put on the reception tables and have two purposes.  First, they are used as table decorations and second they are small tokens of appreciation to all of your wedding guests.  Wedding favors are all a matter of what you as the bride and groom choose to have.  There are several basic wedding favors or you can choose to do something a little more distinctive to fit into your wedding theme.

wedding favors

Many wedding couples choose something simple like small boxes filled with chocolate kisses or Jordan Almonds.  Sometimes these candies are put into small mesh bags instead of boxes.   Wedding favors can be personalized with your names and wedding dates, or just about anything else you want on them.

There are many categories of wedding favors.  Categories include edible wedding favors, practical wedding favors, and eco-friendly wedding favors.  There are an unlimited ideas for edible wedding favors.  You can have two of the listed categories above but what about something a little more original?  How about suckers that are personalized, or specially decorated, and  individually wrapped cookies?  Many kinds of cookie that can be chosen.  What about special fortune cookies?  How about personalized M & M’s?  They can be purchased in your wedding colors and personalized with your picture or names.  You can also just buy labels for mini candy bars or full size candy bars so you can save a little money by covering your own chocolate bars.

Not really into candies but still want something edible?  Think about personalized tea bags or pouches of coffee.  You can also find small containers of jams or jelly’s, hot sauces and barbecue sauces, or even vinegar and oil.  Vinegar and oil containers are a great idea and then you can serve salad as one of your courses of dinner.

So maybe you are more into practical wedding favors.  How about small frames with your guests’ pictures in them?  Since many people like candles on their tables,  think about small votive candle holders that are personalized.  Put small candles for a soft ambiance in the room.  Another practical idea is lip balm or ever personalized bottles of water.  Salt and pepper shakers are big as wedding favors as well.  They come in many shapes and sizes and can be purchased to match your wedding theme.  Having a Vegas wedding, or Vegas themed wedding?  Consider a deck of playing cards or personalized poker chips?  Having an outdoor wedding in Summer?  Try personalized silk fans, they will help keep your guests cool.

Are you trying to be more eco-friendly?  Think about miniature flower pots filled with herbs.  You can also get personalized packets of flower seeds, or even specialized paper that you can plant that will grow flowers.  Another idea is eco-friendly bamboo coasters.

There are so many ideas out available online.  With a little research and creativity you will be able to find the perfect idea for your wedding.

Wedding Food Stations

Nov
11

An idea that is quickly gaining popularity in the wedding industry is food stations at the reception or during the cocktail hour.  Some people think of food stations as buffet dining.  This can be true to a point but not necessarily.  Food stations can be specific to a certain part of the dining experience.  One popular food station is a desert bar.  Wedding planners are starting to move towards smaller portions of desserts besides the wedding cake.  These may include individual portion sizes of creme brûlée, individual hot fudge sundaes, strawberry cheesecake, etc.  There are also miniature pastries, cake balls, or shortcakes.  Another idea is a chocolate fountain or fondue.

wedding food station

A good time for a food station is during the cocktail hour.  Set up stations which include smaller portioned finger style, or easily eaten foods.  These may include cheese and fruit, stuffed mushrooms, cold shrimp cocktail, quesadilla strips, or maybe some type of pasta.  Try to not have too much for the cocktail hour so your guests leave plenty of room for the dinner hour.

Keep in mind that food stations can be set up buffet style if you prefer that to a sit down dinner.  There are a couple things you need to consider if this is the way you are going to serve dinner.  You need to make sure that the room is arranged in such a way that the flow to each food station is uninterrupted and out of the way.  There is nothing worse than having your guests in line for the food station in the middle of the seating area.  Another thing to consider is timing.  It will take a little longer for a buffet style dinner than a sit down dinner.  Just make sure your music entertainment understands this.  Also give your guest platy of room to socialize for the cocktail hour as this is the meant for mingling.

Here is a special idea for a food station and your guests.  Think about setting up a candy bar for your guests to help themselves on their way out of the wedding reception.  There are many different kinds of candy that can be displayed in large glass containers.  Have scoops in each container and small bags for your guests to fill for the ride home.  Other food stations may include coffee, doughnuts, and whatever else your heart desires.

How To Make Your Own Wedding Boutonniere

Nov
08

How to make your own wedding boutonniere.  Start with choosing a flower.  Roses are very popular but you can use just about any flower you like.  Next, you need to choose some type of filler to place with the flower.  You can use leaves, grouping of leaves, herbs, eucalyptus or maybe some baby’s breath.  You are also going to need something to bind everything together.  Floral tape works great for this.

wedding boutonniere

First, take your flower and cut the stem to about two inches – just an estimate.  It can be shorter or longer if you choose.  Just make sure it is long enough so you have something to fasten the boutonniere to the lapel.  You do not need to select only one flower.  Many boutonnieres are made with two or more flowers also.  It just depends on what you prefer.  Next, place the filler (greenery or otherwise) behind the flower.  You can also place some of the fill to the side if you like.  Take the floral tape, start at the base of the flower and wrap tightly around the flower and filler.  Be sure to wrap tightly so that the boutonniere will stay together.  Floral tape comes in several colors.  Select which ever one suits you best.

After the boutonniere is fastened, you can add embellishments to it.  These include ribbons or possibly jewels.  Make sure you get a boutonniere pin to fasten it securely to the lapel.

Think about the season, or theme of the wedding when you are choosing the flowers and fillers for your boutonniere.  If you are having a fall wedding, think about incorporating the shades and symbols of autumn into your boutonniere.  Think about orange, red/rust and yellow flowers.  Or how about groupings of acorns or tiny pre-wired pine cone flowers.  Ferns work well as a filler and so do brightly colored ribbons.  Do not forget about the ends of wheat stalks as fillers also.

Having a Christmas wedding?  How about a deep red rose surrounded by some pine greenery with a shimmery Christmas style ribbon.  Or think outside the box with tiny pine cones bundled with cedar sprigs tied with a plaid Christmas ribbon.  Holly with holly berries look great together also.  If you are going for a winter wonderland theme but not strictly Christmas, try Edelweiss flowers and frog berries over dusty-miller leaves finished with a rich white ribbon.  This has a very wintery look while being very sophisticated.

Keep in mind, boutonnieres do not have have to be made of just real flowers and fillers.  If you are looking to save some money, try using artificial flowers, flowers made of ribbons or felt, etc.  Use your imagination when putting your boutonniere together.  But, keep in mind what the rest of the flowers in the wedding are going to be.  You want to keep a consistent theme with the floral arrangements.
