R&B is a genre of smooth pop music that is entirely centered on the vocalist. R&B started in the U.S. in the 30’s with the migration of African Americans to urban cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. The 60’s and 70’s had created a new style of R&B called Funk. Funk became popular with artists such as George Clinton and Sly and the Family Stone. In the 90’s a new style of R&B was created and stayed with acts like Jodeci, Boyonce and Ashanti. The late 90’s gave birth to a new form of R&B with artists like D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill and John Legend.
